Epiphany Celebration and Annual Meeting

covered dishSunday, January 3 is Epiphany Sunday. Because Epiphany is also our name, we will do what Episcopalians do best and party down!

Our worship in the nave at 10:30 am will be a Festival Holy Eucharist, and then we’ll adjourn to the Little House for a covered dish lunch. When everyone has eaten his fill, we’ll celebrate the good work we did in 2015, elect Vestry members for the year 2016, and dream and vision together for the year to come.

Then we’ll all go home and take a nap. Can you think of a better way to spend a Sunday?

Wanna see inside?

If you have never been inside our church but just can’t bear to attend an actual flesh-and-blood worship service, here’s your chance. The nave at Epiphany will be open to the public Saturday, December 12 from 10:30 am until 1:00 pm. It’s all part of the Tallassee Tour of Churches, sponsored by the McCraney Cottle Arts Council. Come on by. No snakes, and no sermon. Promise.

The Feast of St Francis and Blessing of the Animals

141005 blessing of the animals 1 for siteYou won’t want to miss the outdoor folk Mass this Sunday, October 4 at 10:30 am. Look for the tent on your right as you drive in. And if you see Jody Jeffcoat of Jeffcoat Funeral Home, tell him thank you for setting up one of his tents for us.

Epiphany will celebrate the Feast of St Francis, which falls this year on the Sunday itself. And of course, in keeping with our tradition, Father Wells invites everyone to bring animals to bless. Lots of the Epiphany folk will bring their dogs, of course. Andy and Betty Stricker will load up trailers for the trek to church; they’re planning to bring their two goats and their tiny horse. So everyone can prepare, there will be no Sunday School this Sunday.

If you cannot bring your pet, feel free to pack a favorite toy, feeding bowl, or other article for Father Wells to bless. We think God understands.

Laura and Michael Williams will not be bringing Piggy this year. At 80 pounds, she’s a little heavy to pick up. Piggy has always had a stubborn streak, and now she has the girth to back it up! Piggy’s loss is Henry’s gain, though. The Williams’ dog will be coming instead.

If you play an instrument, bring it to help with the music. Father Wells says everything’s in G so you only need to play three chords, G, C, and D. Dress for comfort and bring refreshments to serve in the Little House right after the service.

And if you have an extra leash, throw it in the car in case visitors arrive without.

Thank you, Greg!

Dr Greg Dubay is one of those quiet heroes of Epiphany. He makes little noise and is rarely seen, but he makes life better for our flock and for those we serve.

imageMost recently, Greg quietly painted the handrail in front of the Little House. I thought you’d appreciate a chance to read the note he left with the latest delivery of Boost dietary supplement and adult diapers that he left on our doorstep.

If you see Greg, tell him thank you. Whether you see him or not, offer a quick prayer of thanks for Greg and his invaluable service.

We Welcome Bishop Kee Sloan

kee sloan for postWe are delighted to welcome Bishop Kee Sloan to Epiphany on Sunday, May 31. Kee will join us for an informal conversation at 9:30 am in the nave, and then we will prepare for Festival Holy Eucharist at 10:30 as we celebrate Trinity Sunday. After we worship, we will break bread together in the Little House with dinner on the grounds. If you’d like, bring a side dish to share with friends.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with the leader of the Alabama Diocese. We need your presence to make our joy complete!

The Epiphany Banner Show

Did you miss it? Many of us did, when Elizabeth Harber and Sharon Cleary brought out all our banners for a photo op after worship Sunday (of course leaving out the green banner we use for Epiphany and the long green season of Pentecost, because it was hanging). I must confess to seeing four of them for the first time. Pretty cool!

Election of Two New Vestry Members

Congratulations to Mike Harber and Michael Williams, our two newest Vestry members, who were elected by acclimation in our annual church meeting yesterday. The picture of the full vestry is in place on the Vestry page. A hearty thank you and “Well done, good and faithful servant” to Laura Williams and Cathy Jones, who rotated off the vestry in 2015.

Annual Report from Father Wells

January 4, 2015
Epiphany Sunday
979th Week as Priest
806th Week at St Dunstan’s
71st Week at Epiphany-Tallassee

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. AMEN.

Dear Friends in Christ,

This is a big day in the life of our church. We have come to the end of our 20th year, a time of celebration. Now we turn our attention to growing the Kingdom of God. Doing that involves the important work of outreach, stewardship, worship, education, evangelism, and pastoral care.

I’ve been the priest for four small churches over the past two decades–St. Michael’s in Fayette, Emmanuel in Opelika, St. Matthew’s in-the-Pines in Seale, and now (I am delighted to say) Epiphany in Tallassee. I know how difficult it is to grow a small church, and how hard it is to say goodbye to people when they move away. We’re going to have to do that with Dan and Kelli Kerr and their beautiful children (Xander and Elizabeth) all too soon.

I believe in clarity and speaking the truth in love. I see more clearly what Epiphany went through a few years ago, with the loss of members, income, and morale. I don’t see any point in dwelling on the past–but I do think that we are entering a time of restoration and rebuilding–and I’m not really talking about our wonderful church building.

I’m talking about the people of Epiphany. We need stability, constancy, and unity. We must be able to count on each other and communicate with each other. We must seek peace and pursue it. And we need to remember that salvation is always found in the present. There is forgiveness and reconciliation involved in Kingdom work, and we all have to do our part.

Take a good look at the report (attached). The first part, titled “Annual Parish Meeting,” shows a comparison of last year and this year, 2013 and 2014. We’ve improved in most categories, but only by slim margins. The one shining light over the past two years has been the growth and return on investment we’ve seen in our Investments at the Diocese of Alabama. It looks like we might just be able to build that Parish Hall before too many years! And we can thank Betty Weldon for her excellent work; Betty is the rock star of small church finance!

The second part is more detailed. It’s a longer view of Epiphany from the years of 2007 to 2014, and it’s based on Parochial Reports that are made each year-end to the Diocese of Alabama and the Episcopal Church USA. I’ll tell you a secret … I like looking at numbers! I think it’s absolutely vital to keep good records and to show people how to read them. It makes for a healthier, stronger church; and it builds commitment from our members.

I had mixed feelings about giving you a lot of information today. I don’t want to overwhelm anybody with dollars and cents, but I believe strongly that you deserve to know the hard work of your Vestry. They have been very good stewards of our resources, and they have made sound decisions and taken right actions on our behalf.

If we want people to accept responsibility for their stewardship–personally and as a church–then it seems good and right to lay all the cards on the table. We have a challenge before us, one that may take several years to meet:

•to rebuild our baptized members to a strong eighty
•to inspire our people to give reasonably and sensibly to the church
•to convince everybody to make an annual pledge
•to finish the excellent work of painting and repairing our beautiful building (a much smaller but quite necessary job on the eaves, railings, and etc.)
•to continue our Beans & Rice ministry with enthusiasm, and
•to become more visible in Tallassee, Lake Martin, and surrounding cities and towns as a church of Anglican worship, Bible study, and Christian community

I know we can do these things together, with God’s help. I am encouraged, filled with a sure and certain hope, and fully determined. And I hope that you are, too.

Peace, and God’s Strength be with us all, AMEN.

ACTS Christmas Program

ACTS is conducting its Christmas Program starting Monday, September 22nd thru Thursday, October 16th. They are asking for volunteers to take the Christmas applications. Contact Barry Adair @ 283-6750 to help with this ministry. The Christmas Food Boxes will be $30 this year regardless of the cost to ACTS. They will need help distributing the boxes and toy bags to take the burden off of the regular volunteers. The dates are September 7, 2014,  Tuesday, Dec. 16th and Wed. Dec. 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. If you would like to help please call Barry Adair @ 283-6750. We are going to put this info in our Sunday bulletin for all our members to be able to help with this local ministry. Here at Epiphany, Cathy Jones will be in charge of our donations to the ACTS Christmas Program.
